RFYC Cadet success in the Scottish Final of the RYA Honda Rib Challenge 2012

On Saturday 16th June, Royal Forth Yacht Club cadet, 14 year old Robyn Dougall took the Bronze at the Scottish Final of the RYA Honda Rib Challenge 2012 at Port Edgar.

The Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship, sponsored by Honda and Ribcraft, is a National Championship in which 8 – 16 year olds driving 5 metre Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIB) with 60 hp engines demonstrate their skills in a timed event. These boats accelerate rapidly up to 45 miles an hour and the competitors race around a circuit that tests their abilities to the full. There is a slalom element, an emergency stop element (or “man overboard buoy”), and a reverse element, followed by a sprint to the finish.

Robyn, who won the 8 –12 Scottish final 2 years ago in 2010 is now racing in the senior group, took 3rd place in this year’s hotly competed Scottish final. She was also the fastest girl, which in an adrenaline filled sport such as this is a further achievement.

The race was held in wild conditions at Port Edgar. The sea state was such that waves were breaking inside the Marina as a strong North Easterly blasted the course. In conditions such as this the slightest mistake will incur penalty points, such as being blown onto one of the race marks or shipping any water. The competitors had to work out tide and wind angles whilst powering through the course to make sure they were not blown or swept fractionally off their lay lines.

1st Place – Fraser Macmillan – Largs Sailing Club
2nd  Cameron Lancaster – Dalgety Bay Sailing Club
3rd Robyn Dougall – Royal Forth Yacht Club
