The 2013 Edinburgh Regatta sponsored by Edinburgh Gin. Report and photos from Liz Tulloch
The 2013 Edinburgh Regatta, held on 22/23rd June certainly provided challenging conditions for the 23 competitors.
Skies were overcast on both days with gust rapidly overtaking gust and stirring up a cauldron of troubled waters. The effect was real Twilight of the Gods stuff!
The Race teams, however, were well up to their task and provided competitors with interesting courses on both days despite the conditions while the Ribs kept watch beside the Committee boats.
Division 1, the Fast Classes, sailing off Silverknowes Bay, were in their element giving a demonstration of fast sailing in tough conditions.
The 2 RS Elites, More T Vicar, sailed by Carl Allen and Shaun Maclean’s Elixir mopped up this class, demonstrating their ability to handle heavy weather and maintain their speed.
In Division 2 , the biggest class with 11 entries, the Dragon, Wizz Too, found the conditions which make the Dragons formidable and they set the pace while the H-Boat , Hopscotch, took second place.
George Scrivener from Forth Cruising Club drove the Salty Dog, Joint Venture to victory in Class 3. A varied race programme was introduced for this group and Sunday featured a Stern Chase which was an interesting innovation to the regatta.
Throughout the weekend the weather played an important part in the event with some boats, such as Chic Medley’s Hobbes reaching impressive speeds.
Thanks go to our sponsors, Edinburgh Gin which provided the prizes and to organisers, Patrick Carnie and Howard Thompson and crews of Committee boats, Royal Forth and March Whisker.
Thanks also to the yacht Skimmer, which had the presence of mind to toast Committee boat, March Whisker as they finished the race.
