RYA 1st Aid Course
Royal Forth Yacht Club members Ken Dougall, Hannah Robertson, Emily Robertson, and Robyn Dougall attended an RYA 1st Aid Course in Airdie on Saturday, 8 March.
As instructors we need to keep our first aid certificates up to date and this was Robyn’s first time through. We were joined by Johnny a well known sailor from Ireland who brought interesting anecdotes from across the water. Also in attendance Ken’s dog “Mac” who nodded off at times but took a quiet interest in the proceedings. He was protective of our members – when he saw 5 CPR dummies lined up on the floor facing him he emitted a low growl that escalated to barking. Once he had a look and sniff he realised that they did not pose a threat to the Royal Forth contingent and nodded off again. He did well in the 9 hour course as he is not even one year old yet!
Ken and Emily tried on the TPA’s (Thermal Protection Aids) that must be carried on all coded yachts and all rescue boats. They are basically “space” blankets but cut and sealed into the shape of a suit. The reflective heat build up is instant and impressive. Should anyone need to board a liferaft then these should be put on immediately to keep the occupant warm and protected from the wet. The Royal Forth Yacht Club rescue boats each have one of these as part of their safety kit.
