Behind the scenes of “the guga hunters of Ness”

Every year, in an age-old tradition, folk from Ness in Lewis spend two weeks on Sula Sgeir hunting young gannets – gugas.

The Browns’ son Will (an RFYC member till this year) was one of the team who helped to make the BBC film,  in somewhat challenging sailing conditions. It was the first time this traditional hunt was filmed for nearly 50 years, The boat was knocked down, and emergency repairs were carried out on a mooring at North Rona before they could get the camera team ashore on Sula Sgeir. This excellent short film might be of interest to members.
