Cadet Kate Angier wins bronze at The Scottish Powerboat Championships.

Sixteen youngsters aged between 8 and 16 competed in gale force winds in the RYA Honda Rib Challenge on Saturday 6th June 2015. This event took place on Loch Winnoch in Renfrewshire and is the Royal Yachting Associations Scottish Powerboat Championships. The crowds saw spectacular action, as the youngsters competed not only against each other, but against the elements as well. The Royal Forth Yacht Club had TWO cadets representing the club, Cameron Walker for the 13 to 16 age group and Kate Angier in the 8-12 age group. This is the second time Kate has represented the club at this event but is the first time for Cameron. The RFYC team was trained by our own Ken Dougall who has experience of training 3 previous winners.

Kate Angier powered her way through 48 knot winds and driving hail to win the Bronze Medal. Kate was a full 6 seconds ahead of the next rival. This is the second Bronze medal Kate has won at this event as she achieved a similar result in last year’s Championships.

Cameron was racing for the first time in these championships and was in the senior race group. He put in two good times but picked up penalties on the way which dropped his position to 6th.

Each competitor has two attempts on the challenging course and their best time goes forward. The course consists of a slalom, a stop mark, a reverse mark and then a sprint to the finish. The race tuned powerboats are supplied by the RYA and have 50 horse power engines making the boats travel at over 35 knots.

Last years Scottish champion RFYC cadet Robyn Dougall went to the championships to support and advise this years RFYC team as at the age of 17 she is now too old to compete!
