Recently we reported that plastics are becoming the weapon of mass destruction for the marine environment, with a current major problem being plastic cotton bud stalks flushed down the toilet (what sort of cretin would do that?!?, you might well ask), and mentioned a petition asking the major supermarket chains to switch from plastic to cardboard cotton bud stalks.
Delighted to report that the petition has been successful! Most of the major supermarket chains have agreed to phase out plastic cotton buds by 2018.
This effort has been led by the charity City to Sea, which is drawing attention to, and working to reduce, all sorts of pollution that damage sea life. You might wish to take an interest in their work.
