Coming home from Orkney via Whitehills Marina in late June 2016, we saw an absolutely stunning Hunter 707 on a trailer by the harbour. Her name is Poimandres, and some of our members will remember that she is one of the 707s the club owned for a while.
By pure chance, I met her new owner Graeme Gordon in Whitehills last year, on my way back from the Orkney Race. He told me she was in quite poor condition when he bought her, but they had her done up, painted a beautiful name and logo on her side, had matching covers, rope bags and lifeline covers made up by Chic Medley at Sail Doctor, and generally lavished TLC on her to make her as good as new, or better. They were also very pleased with the success of their first couple of years’ racing.
Poimandres won the 707 class in the Banff regatta in 2014 and 2015. In 2015 she got a third at the Gael Force Regatta at Lossiemouth and won the Whitehills regatta for a second time, not only winning the 707 class but were the first boat over the line, beating 40ft and 36ft boats – so, Graeme said, “a big grin on my face this week”. And later in 2015 they won the Marex Trophy at Banff Sailing Club. She looks ready to build on her success this year!
