Tickets now available for the Cruising Raft Up on Sunday the 15th of October at Scotland’s Boat Show.

RYA Scotland Cruising and General Purposes Committee will host two Cruising Raft Up sessions on Sunday the 15th of October (one in morning and same programme again in the afternoon) in the Chartroom at Kip Marina, Inverkip with the aim of providing a series of interactive discussions and workshops with a keynote speaker of adventurer, Jock Wishart.

Jock Wishart

Jock has undertaken many maritime expeditions which push the boundaries of the exploration. He reflects on the key motivations and challenges of setting out, offering some inspiration for all seeking adventure afloat. He commented, “I’m looking forward to being part of RYA Scotland’s Cruising Raft and share some of the key lessons learnt in my lifetime of making the impossible, possible.”

Lynda Towers, Vice Chair of RYA Scotland will provide an insight into Brexit and how it may affect recreational boating. As a lawyer involved in European and Maritime Law in connection with the Department of Transport she joined the Planning and Environmental Committee as a volunteer, then moved onto RYA Council and the Cruising and General Purposes Committee advising on legal issues at a UK level. Lynda will provide some excellent information on Brexit and what it will mean for your boating.

Using a life-raft…

There will be practical demonstrations on safety equipment and the latest updates in cruising presented byRod Smith from sportscotland National Centre Cumbrae. As one of four Cruising Centre inspectors in Scotland he predominately inspects the 27 centres offering RYA Cruising and Yachtmaster courses. As an Advanced Powerboat Examiner; Powerboat Instructor Trainer; Yachtmaster Sail and Power Trainer and Examiner; Senior Instructor, PWC and Windsurf Instructor Rod has built up some impressive RYA qualifications that has allowed him to become part of this small group who share the best practices and knowledge around the RYA Training Centres. Rod Smith is also one of two international inspectors from Scotland who spend time inspecting overseas RYA training centres.

Bob Bradfield of Antares Charts will be talking through some of the practical aspects of how he set out to produce detailed surveys of anchorages around Scotland. Working from his Nimbus 37 motorboat, Pegasus, Bob has to date carried out hundreds of detailed surveys of small-boat anchorages which he then creates unique high level electronic charts.

Despite describing the extraordinary undertaking as a hobby, it seems to be informing cruising yachtsman to get more information electronically on a variety of anchorages.

This is a great opportunity to gain technical advice and tips on a variety of current cruising topics.
