What’s it all about?

The 2015 Edinburgh Gin Regatta is upon us and this year we would like to share our passion for boats, and racing in particular, with our neighbours in Edinburgh and along the banks of the Forth.

The racing takes place over three days, starting with a Feeder Race on the Friday evening, from Port Edgar down to Granton Harbour, followed by two days of racing off Edinburgh itself. This culminates in the prize-giving held at the Royal Forth Yacht Club’s clubhouse on Sunday evening.

Information for participants:
Background

Sailing nowadays has lost much of the elitism of the past but none of its excitement- where else can you push your vehicle as fast as you possibly can, right to the limit, without fear of speed cameras, traffic lights or general road restrictions, and where perhaps the worst that could happen is a bit of a dookin’? The vast majority of our participants are ordinary folk who just happen to like messing about on the water, often in boats costing a fraction of many of the cars seen on our streets.

The RFYC has a full programme of racing during the season: the North Sea Helgoland-to-Edinburgh race, which completed last week, sees boats race every two years from Germany to Edinburgh; the Festival Series of races, which coincide with the Edinburgh Festival; and many, many more, to say nothing of the weekly club races – see our racing events page for a complete listing.

One of our aims is to encourage greater awareness of our island and sailing heritage in the public at large. Wider participation in sailing generally is the means and the annual Edinburgh Gin Regatta, a long-time institution in Edinburgh’s sailing calendar, provides the opportunity to showcase the modern era of sailing. What’s more, the public can easily view the racing for free from Edinburgh’s seafront. The lucky winners of the Edinburgh Gin Facebook competition will be afloat to see the race from close quarters.

Hospitality boat

On this occasion we offered places on our hospitality boat to members of the media who would like to come along and experience the racing up close on the water, accompanied by a club member to explain what is happening for anyone new to sailing.

The boat, MV Conserver  (www.seahunter-marine.co.uk), left Middle Pier at Granton Harbour at 9.30am on Saturday 13th June. Over the next 3-4 hours, it followed the yachts as they race around the course, allowing close-up views of the action as it happens. This provides an excellent insight into tactics and the potential for some highly dynamic footage and photos.

Places are severely limited and were offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you have any questions at all, feel free to contact us using the contact form on this website.

We look forward to welcoming you to the 2015 Edinburgh Gin Regatta, whether afloat or on land.
